Gabriel

“All you’ve got is all you can give and that will always be enough.” ~Unknown

Late last week I was contacted by Kim who recently had a baby with spina bifida. I’ve lost track of the hundreds of people who have contacted me since my son Chance was diagnosed with spina bifida. Each message has pulled at my heartstrings and I suppose helped remind me that I’m not totally alone in raising a child with spina bifida. Kim was suggested to contact me to photograph her son by one of Chance’s doctors. I’m not certain but I believe her son Gabriel might be the first baby born with spina bifida in central Florida since Chance was born in February. If I recall correctly, 1 out of about 1000 babies are born with spina bifida and I believe in central Florida only about a dozen or so babies are born and referred to the spina bifida clinic. I know that makes Chance and Gabriel two very special little ones.

I elected to begin Gabriel’s photos with some of the most special shots. Before I had Chance I’m not so sure I would have been begging parents to let me photograph their baby’s imperfections. However, I’ve come to realize just how special the scar is to a family who has a baby with spina bifida. I suppose it sort of symbolizes the whole reason for the challenges they may face in life. Just like my son Chance, Gabriel also had back closure surgery and a surgery to have a shunt placed due to hydrocephalus.

There’s no doubt how much this little guy is loved. As Kim mentioned to me…he’s a miracle.

All too often it’s tough to get people to smile with a true smile for photos. Of course candid moments usually lend well to the authentic smiles I adore. We can all thank Gabriel for peeing the very moment this shot was taken. Good job Gabriel, our plan worked out perfectly.:)

Kim was a great sport and held him a moment longer for one more shot. Yes, priceless moments that neither of us will forget.

Gabriel is about five weeks old and he did a super job during his first photo session. Okay, this is only the second baby with spina bifida I’ve photographed but thus far I swear they’re superstar baby models!:)

And just like Chance, he smiles a lot! I suppose he also realizes how much he’s blessed this world with his presence.

Though Gabriel also has a scar his is uniquely different.

Did I tell you this kid rocks?! Okay, you’ll just have to see for yourself…

I got to admire some of his fine details because he was so content.

He slept nearly the entire time he was with me for photos, however, he did open his eyes briefly. He sure is one sweet little guy.

Once we were done we decided to try to get the boys together for a few photos. It was not an easy task to get them both together without crying, but thankfully they were both still a tad bit sleepy. I wish I would have taken a video of them both as we posed them. They are two of the noisest babies who are so much alike. Both of them were grunting and making some of the most hilarious noises as we set them up for these photos. Perhaps it was baby talk…you know, perhaps Chance was warning Gabriel how much I torture him by taking his photos virtually every day. Yes, I broke a sweat trying to get a nearly 10 week old and a 5 week old in one shot…here are three that should make you all smile of Chance and his new friend Gabriel….two tough little guys!

Kim I hope you enjoy the photos of Gabriel. I can sense just how much he has blessed your family. Best wishes to you all.

The Myers

Michelle (aka Mrs. Myers) has been Hope’s teacher for both second and third grade. Though Hope absolutely adores all her teachers, our family has been so incredibly grateful to have her there for Hope these last two years as our family has endured such challenging moments. Since late last year we’ve all been anticipating the arrival of her twin boys. All the babies I photograph hold a special spot in my heart and memory so we can already sense her two babies boys will be that much more special to our family. Hope absolutely adores Mrs. Myers and is so excited to meet her babies. Of course Mrs. Myers knows this…Hope writes notes virtually every day on most of her school work to make sure she knows just how excited she is. Needless to say the boys will definitely enter this world loved by many. I spent some time earlier this morning meeting with Michelle & Chris for some maternity photos before their twin boys arrive.  It was fun spending a little time with them in the final weeks before their boys are born.

Michelle & Chris I hope you enjoy the photos. Best wishes these last few weeks. I can’t wait to meet your boys!

updates & another to do list

“You wouldn’t believe how many amazing things happened right before the person trying them was about to give up entirely. It’s, like, most of the amazing things. Really.” ~Unknown

Chance turned 9 weeks old Tuesday and I took him in for his 2 month check up with the pediatrician. He got his first round of shots and was such a trooper. I couldn’t help but admire his little legs getting a little pudgier with two colorful band-aids.

Now typically I, like most mothers, would say “awe….shots” — but really they were nothing. Nothing at all. Maybe it’s because he’s my third child…or maybe it’s because I’ve seen this little guy endure much more than some silly shots. Yes, and he did amazing. He barely cried at all. In fact, the nurse said he was one of the best babies she’s had to give shots to because all he did was let out a little wimper of a cry.

His check up confirmed the obvious…this little guy is growing. He is now 10 pounds 2 ounces (25th percentile) and 20 1/2 inches long (3rd percentile). Despite how much he’s grown, I returned home to reflect on Hope and Jaylen’s measurements at the same age. Considering he was itty bitty at birth and went through so much in the first three weeks it should come as no surprise that Chance is the smallest of the three thus far. Perhaps he’ll catch up to their growth in time, but if not, I still enjoy him being my uber cute little guy.

Speaking of growth…the milk supply has definitely grown since we’ve been  home from the NICU. I’ve maintained the pumping schedule I’ve been since Chance was in the hospital on to ensure that when I returned to work we wouldn’t be scrambling to make sure Chance had enough to eat during the times I was away. It can be very stressful to try to “keep up” so I feel pretty awesome knowing that’ll be one less thing to stress about. The only stressor now is keeping it all organized by date to ensure nothing expires. Here’s about a month’s worth of hard work. All 260 ounces of his milk that equates to about 16 1/4 pounds. Yes, I officially feel like a milk factory after doing the math. This kid better start eating more or we may need another freezer before long.:)

I know everyone is eager to see his sweet face. So here’s a quick photo I took of him today in his swing as he sat contently sporting his sheriff shirt.:)

This week has definitely been one of the busiest weeks since Chance was born. Tuesday the kids and I got to watch Hope play in her little league softball game. Thankfully Chance slept contently in the bjorn while I got to take lots of photos of the game. I’m sure the parents got a kick out of me toting around a baby and my nikon that many have claimed weighs more than the baby.:)

softball...

In between taking photos I am typically making sure both the boys are content which isn’t always the easiest task when it’s 90+ degrees outside. Chance slept the entire time this time around which made life sooooo much easier. Jaylen sometimes begs to go home after a short time, thankfully this time he ran around and played. Three is definitely one of my favorite ages to photograph…I get such genuine expressions from him.

Tonight we had a bit of fun at Hope’s school at one of their annual functions. Yes, I say this week has been busy between work, photography, and the kids…but really I think it’s really been more of an “active” week for me as I’ve been steadily learning to take all three kids out on my own and I’ve been doing more and more physically than I have in months. Okay, I admit it made me tired tonight…but really it does feel great to gradually getting back to things. Here’s me & my boys…while I was toting Chance in the bjorn, the trusty camera/diaper bag, and my other kid (aka my nikon).:)

Me & the boys at Hope's school

Realizing how much I have going on I had to keep myself sane by creating another mindmap of my to do list. I suppose these darn things have helped make sense of all I have going on. People joke with me saying “you’re busy” but it never really hits me until I make one of these. Most of the things listed pertain to teaching, tenure, SCAD, or photography. I totally neglected to put in the other things that consume my day like laundry, dishes, and everything else around here to keep this crazy house of mine in order…ah, but that would be a totally different mindmap that might be larger. Anyhow, you might be humored to take a peak at it if you’re curious to know the things I’m juggling at the moment. If you click on the image it will allow you to see it a bit larger in flickr.

Oh, and one more update…if you’re interested in a free photo session keep an eye out for a chance at one. I plan to post more info tomorrow so we can help get this scholarship started in honor of Deputy Brandon Coates at Valencia. I’ll share more info in the next day or so.

The Brand’s

This past weekend I met with fellow photographer and friend, Gian Carlo Brand and his wife Jaya. Gian Carlo (who most of you have likely heard me refer to more often as “Blue”) spent time earlier in the morning photographing our family and afterwards we made the most of the remainder of the morning by taking a few photos of him and his wife who are expecting their first child in the next week or two. We had reached the point in the morning when the heat and the light were both beginning to get a bit more intense than we’d like so I only spent a brief time taking photos with them. I totally adore this couple and enjoyed helping capture a few moments with them as they anxiously await their baby girl. There’s no question that their daughter will be spoiled and blessed by their love.

I’ve known Blue for close to ten years and I have to admit that it’s so uplifting to see how much his face lights up with happiness since he and Jaya have been together. He definitely loves his beautiful wife and is so proud and excited to soon be a father. I couldn’t be happier for my dear friend.

As breathtaking as some of the images of them were to capture, I can’t help but include a few humorous moments that hopefully they won’t curse me for sharing. Anyone who knows Blue knows he’s one outgoing, fun, and loving guy who is a joy to be around. Yes, this is Blue…proclaiming how much he adores his beautiful wife.

I know they’re counting down the days. It won’t be long and we’ll all get to meet their little girl.

Behind the scenes with Blue

“It is prosperity that gives us friends, adversity that proves them.” ~ Unknown

I told Blue back in December that someday I’d blog about him after I took this photo of him.

I took that photo back in December when we got to work together doing photography for the first time participating in Help-Portrait and teaming up to photograph the Bosley Family that same day. It was certainly a memorable day and helped me look forward the months ahead as he and I discussed him helping capture moments with our family as well as moments surrounding Chance’s birth in February. I’ve known Blue since 2001 when I began going to school at Valencia while I was still pregnant with Hope. We’ve taken quite a few courses together and have worked together for several years. Many of you may know him as Gian Carlo Brand, his nickname “Blue” that he went by when we first took classes together still sticks with me all these years. Blue and I have known one another so long that he does seem a lot like a brother to me and I could think of no one better to have helped us in capturing some of the most personal and private moments with our family the last few months. Thanks to him we have some amazing photos to accompany the memories. Our family is so thankful to have such a great friend to share these moments with. He and his wife have been there for our family several times, not just to take photos but to reach out and show their support as we have endured some of the most challenging moments our family has ever faced. There’s no doubt that the adversity our family has faced has only strengthened the connection our families have with one another.

If you’ve been following my blog you may have seen the photos Blue took back at the beginning of February of our family while I was still pregnant with Chance. We planned to take photos again sometime after Chance was born. We’ve both been so busy but finally found time this morning to meet again for photos. I’m sure in time Blue will share his photos from today. I got a chance to take a few photos in between when I was in photos…so I thought it was worth sharing a sneak peak of some moments from the morning which I’m sure will leave you all a little more anxious to see his photos.

It was a beautiful sunny morning here in Florida. When we arrived we all chatted and caught up. Jason held Chance and we all admired how much he has grown since we last saw Blue when Chance was in the NICU.

Yes, watch out…I believe this kid might just be beginning to recognize my camera!:)

While Blue was getting his gear ready Hope and Chance spent some time together. Chance absolutely adores Hope…it’s so evident in this photo.

Blue spent a bit of time photographing Hope & Jaylen together. It’s always a treat to see how other photographers approach a photoshoot…he was totally immersed in the moment of capturing some adorable moments with these two cute kiddos of mine.

I think Hope might be Blue’s new favorite model after the last couple months. We all joked today that with as many photos as I’ve taken of her over the years that she does have close to 10 years of modeling experience.:)

He let the kids play and be themselves…yes, they wrestled…WWE style…sure we let them “power bomb” one another for a few photos. It was totally worth seeing the laughter and it certainly helped them open up a bit more.

After we took the majority of our family photos Blue agreed to fill up Jaylen’s water gun. It totally made his day…yes, I think it totally made both of their days.

While we were out we left Jason and Chance behind so that I could take some photos of Blue & his wife who are expecting their little girl next month. When we headed back Blue spotted this moment and quickly grabbed my camera to take this photo because his were all packed away in his bags far away from him. We all looked on and admired the moment of Jason and his baby boy as Blue took a photo of such an unforgettable moment.

Blue primarily specializes in photo journalistic wedding photography but is known to do a lot of other amazing photography of couples and events. It’s worth checking out his blog or facebook page to see some of his most recent work that I’m sure you all would admire.

Yes, Blue has become that much more special to our family the last few months. Taking this photo of him with the kids reminded me of that. He’s certainly someone the kids have gotten quite comfortable with. Jaylen now refers to him as “blue” and after both of the times we’ve had him take photos with our family he’s said “that was fun!” Yes, often times my kids are so tired of photos because I take so many of them on an almost daily basis and they definitely felt that way before we started to take photos today. However, Blue definitely did a great job connecting with them to help us capture more memorable moments…something tells me years from now we’ll look back and have quite a few amazing photos taken by and with this awesome photographer and wonderful friend of ours.

Blue thank you once again for helping us capture moments with our family…and helping create another memorable day.
