Photo session giveaway winners

A big thanks to everyone who donated to Valencia’s Brandon Coates Memorial Scholarship fund. I had Hope pull 2 names from the hat again and we’re excited to announce the winners: Rachael Terneus and Loida Rennish. Here’s a short video of Hope picking the winners:

The Valencia Foundation is still accepting donations to the scholarship so be sure to visit the foundation’s web site to make a contribution.

Jude

This past weekend I got the opportunity to meet sweet little Jude. At just over six pounds and a little over a week old this little peanut was so alert and expressive. It always amazes me how much of their personality begins to shine through at such a young age.

Melissa I hope you guys enjoy the photos of your adorable little guy. Best wishes to your family — Jude is such a sweet little blessing.

Three months

This past weekend our little man turned 3 months old. Yes, 3 months have passed since he was born…I swear it still seems like February to me. We took a little time Sunday to take photos of him. Yes, I was a little daring…not only trying to get him to sit, but to sit in his bowl. Though he has been able to sit for a few seconds at a time he is very wobbly so with a bit of help from Hope we managed to pull off this shot of him.

Chance @ 3 months old

I’ve come to trust my baby girl helping me so much. She’s been known to try to get him to sit even when the camera isn’t around and I knew I could get this shot if she helped. She agreed and I couldn’t have been more proud of her. At his age my biggest concern was him losing his balancing and falling onto the bowl so there was no way I could have pulled this off without her. Just a few photos to show you what an awesome helper she was.

Chance @ 3 months old

It took a couple of attempts and I just adored watching her patiently work with him. But what I loved even more was watching him look up to her…you can just see the look in his eyes that he already trusts his big sister.

Once we finally got the shot she was sooooo proud. She grabbed his little face and gave him a huge kiss. Yes, priceless. This little guy sure is loved by his big sister.

I think they were both proud to pull of his 3 month photos.:)

And really, 3 months…has it really been that long?! Well, here’s a quick glimpse again…one photo from each of the last three months since his birth. Yes, I know…he’s growing way too fast.

Chance...the last 3 months.

Maya

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away” ~Maya Angelou

This past week I spent some time with my friend and fellow photographer, Gian Carlo Brand and his wife Jaya to capture moments with their sweet little girl Maya. I sensed long before their little girl arrived just how special she’d be. But after witnessing her presence in their lives first hand I can attest to her true beauty and the amazing love they now share with Maya…their sweet little Indian princess. Sometimes moments are that breathtaking that it’s best to let the imagery speak for themselves, I am confident you all will sense how special Maya in the photos taken. My friend, congrats to you and Jaya…you both have been blessed with one amazingly beautiful blessing.

Yes, another surgery

“Only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live.” – Dorothy Thompson

Chance is now 12 1/2 weeks old and we learned today that he has another surgery ahead of him in the near future. Here’s Chance earlier today…he’s one tough little dude.

For those who keep up with us in facebook or flickr you’ve likely heard my brief mention that we had to take Chance to visit a pediatric surgeon today. When he was about a month old he developed an umbilical hernia. Typically hernias are known to go away on their own within a few months but sometimes take a couple years. His pediatrician reassured us at his check ups that we’d just have to wait and that it’d likely go away on it’s own. Since then it’s gradually gotten larger. (there’s a picture in flickr for those who care to see just how large it has grown) I continued to hold onto the hope that it’d gradually go away. But it didn’t. In the last week I noticed a white line showing through his hernia. It’s grown so much that his skin in that area now appears a bit transparent. It didn’t take long before I remembered that his shunt has tubing that goes to his stomach to drain the fluid from his head because of his hydrocephalus due to his spina bifida. His neurosurgeon must love all the emails and calls from us when we get worried but thankfully she’s been there to answer questions. I sent photos of his hernia and shared my concerns and she referred us to see the pediatric surgeon today.

After visiting with the surgeon he agreed it was wise to intervene now, not merely because he has a hernia, but because the hernia is not likely to go away on it’s own due to it’s size and the continual draining of fluid from his shunt. The concern right now is that the skin around his hernia is so thin that his shunt tubing could poke through it. The other concern is that the hernia is causing the tubing to go into the hernia which could affect his shunt. It’s better for them to do the hernia surgery now than “wait and see” if it’ll go away and then him end up having issues with his shunt, or even worse, another shunt surgery.

So yes, it’s a total bummer that our little guy has to have another surgery. It’ll be his 5th surgery in less than 4 months. His surgery is scheduled for June 7th. Thankfully we’ve been reassured that it’s not a complicated surgery and that we shouldn’t be too worried. As long as he recovers okay we were informed that we should be able to take him home the same day. It’s obvious by now that he’s one tough little guy …so what’s one more surgery, right!? I imagine I must sound like the nervous worried mother again. I know he’ll be fine…so for now as we await his next surgery we’ll keep enjoying all the little moments with him and try our hardest not to worry too much.
